The Dark Side of Rocket Launches: A Looming Environmental Crisis
In the quest for space exploration and technological advancement, we often overlook the unintended consequences that lurk in the upper reaches of our atmosphere. A recent study has shed light on a concerning issue: the pollution caused by rocket launches and its potential impact on Earth's climate.
The Problem with Soot
Black carbon, or soot, released by rocket launches behaves differently from its ground-based counterpart. It lingers in the upper atmosphere, a region previously considered pristine, for much longer periods. This finding, led by researchers at University College London (UCL), raises alarms about the environmental implications of our space endeavors.
"Rocket launches are akin to a unique form of pollution, directly contaminating the upper atmosphere," says Connor Barker, an atmospheric chemist and lead author of the study. This pollution has the potential to disrupt Earth's climate in ways we are only beginning to understand.
A Rapidly Growing Industry
The space industry's growth is undeniable. Since 2019, the number of rocket launches has skyrocketed, with this year already surpassing the total for 2020. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets have been a driving force, but China's record-breaking 92 launch attempts in 2025 also contribute to this trend.
"An Unregulated Experiment"
Barker and his colleagues analyzed data from rocket launches and satellite re-entries between 2020 and 2022. Their findings, published in Earth's Future, reveal that soot particles in the upper atmosphere are 540 times more effective at altering the climate than ground-based soot emissions.
"The space industry's pollution is like an unregulated geoengineering experiment," Barker explains. The soot, a byproduct of burning kerosene in rocket fuel, absorbs sunlight, creating a small cooling effect. While this might seem beneficial in the face of global warming, Barker emphasizes that the cooling is minimal compared to the warming caused by other emissions. Moreover, the soot's presence could lead to "many other serious unintended consequences."
Predictions and Uncertainties
The researchers predict that by 2029, the space industry will be releasing approximately 870 tonnes of soot into the atmosphere annually. This is a significant amount, especially when compared to the annual emissions of the UK's entire passenger car fleet, which stood at just 728 tonnes.
However, Barker cautions that these predictions are likely underestimates. The team's calculations are based on data from the beginning of the megaconstellation satellite era (2020-2022), and as the industry continues to grow, the impact could be even more severe.
"It is crucial that we understand the environmental impacts of satellite megaconstellations now, while their influence is still manageable," Barker emphasizes. The need for regulation and further research is evident.
The Need for Regulation
Eloise Marais, the team leader and a professor of atmospheric chemistry and air quality at UCL, echoes Barker's concerns. She highlights the limited efforts to regulate this type of pollution effectively.
"We hope that our work will spur further research and action to measure and regulate space industry emissions," Marais says. The researchers are developing an emissions tracker and utilizing satellite imagery to remotely detect and quantify rocket launch emissions, aiming to visualize the scale of this environmental challenge.
